Grandma Amelia Mattas Mize always had cookies at her house. My favorite was her Ginger Snaps. Shown here is her handwritten recipe. Affectionately known as ‘Ma’, she passed in 1976. If you enjoy the cookies, she would have been pleased!

Ginger Snaps
Ingredients for the Modern Baker
1 1/4 sticks of Oleo (butter or butter substitute), 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1/4 dark molasses, 2 cups sifted flour, 2 tsp. soda, 1 tsp. cinnamon and ginger, 1/2 tsp. ground cloves.
Directions
Cream butter or butter substitute with sugar until light and fluffy, add egg, molasses and beat well, sift together flour, soda and spices add gradually to creamed mixture, mixing well. Chill dough at least one hour. Roll into one inch balls, then into sugar, place 2 1/2 to 3 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake at 375, 8 to 10 minutes or until browned. Let cool in pan, 4 to 6 minutes, remove with spatula. Makes about 4 doz.
